Liberty vs. Leviathan

Chronicling Liberty's battle against Leviathan

Williams and Bastiat – Comrades in Pens

In The Law, part of Bastiat’s definition of legal plunder is that “…the law takes from some persons what belongs to them and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong.” Putting it another way, he says it’s using the law to do to your neighbor what would be a crime if you did it yourself. One of the roots of this injustice he calls “false philanthropy”, a form of so-called “charity” by force of law.

Bastiat fought socialism in mid nineteenth century France.  In “Evil Concealed by Money” today, Walter Williams fights the socialism in the USA and puts some context around Bastiat’s legal plunder.
