Today marks the 234th anniversary of Patrick Henry‘s famous speech to the House of Burgess meeting in St. John’s Episcopal Church in Richmond, VA in 1775.  His speech was offered to persuade the assembly to prepare for war with England.  He ends with the passage that has become famous…

Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!

One of my distinct memories from childhood is of reading his biography and reporting on it.  Would any fourth grader know of him today?
