Liberty vs. Leviathan

Chronicling Liberty's battle against Leviathan

Jail bait

Often when one points out the crimes (legal or ethical) of police officers defenders are quick to say that the officer in question was either in his rights or just one bad apple. William Grigg alerts us to the incredible story of good Samaritans being set up by the police and this time its not just a bad apple it’s the department – the Austin Police Department.

Mark Ledford and Asia Ward reported an abandoned vehicle on their street. Responding police were unconcerned and did nothing. Days later, the pair took matters into their own hands to see if they could determine who the car belonged to or why it was there. For their trouble they now face criminal prosecution for auto burglary. Ledford is understandably bitter, “To hell with being a concerned citizen,” he says. “You hear stories of someone getting mugged and no one gets involved. Now I see why.”

Talking to the police without a lawyer is not a good idea either.
