Tasers for the sick

The Chronicle Herald editors find it “…appalling that Amherst police, called to assist in a medical emergency, not at a crime scene, would consider firing a weapon at the person whose health is in distress.”  In this case on someone with diabetes suffering from low blood sugar which can cause a person to act belligerently and incoherently.  In New York this past week a man with a bipolar disorder was killed after falling off a fire escape as a result of being tasered.

Both jurisdictions are reviewing their taser policies.  The Chronicle Herald already knows what the policy should be: “How about ‘don’t Taser the patients’?”
