Leonie!

Today a quick but needed break from the farcical drama of DC to draw attention to the Liberty that is eternal.

This past summer your blogger had the great fortune to be involved in a small way with the making of a movie. It’s a period piece set in nineteenth century France. The main character is Leonie Martin, an older and difficult sister of St. Thérèse of Lisieux. The story is about Leonie’s difficulties and the Love that conquered them.

The target release for the film is this summer. A featurette and Facebook page for the movie have recently been created. As with any movie on a budget it’s imperative that word gets out and interest piqued in order to help place it in as many theaters as possible. If you have any interest at all please view the links below and spread the word to anyone in your own network who also may be interested.

Vox U Update

For the past nine weeks I’ve been taking part in Vox Day’s Voxiversity III in which participants read and discuss Liberal Fascism by Jonah Goldberg. The book has been interesting thus far, having completed chapters 1 – 9. Goldberg does a very good job in the early chapters taking the reader through the events and personalities that led to the rise of fascism in Europe, progressivism in the US and the mutual admiration of European fascists and US progressives in the 1920s and 1930s.  Some of the later chapters seem to ramble and not be as well organized as the early ones but it has still been a valuable read.  The citations are a treasure trove for further reading and study.

One of the benefits of taking part in Vox U has been the online discussion with other readers at Vox’s blog. Today I present comments made by Godfrey and longplay on the most recent chapter we’ve read.  Chapter Nine covers Hillary Clinton – her background, her goals and her methods. Godfrey captures what those who cherish Liberty are up against and longplay takes Godfrey’s comments a step further and strikes at the root. (All emphasis is mine.)

Godfrey:

Chapter 9 is the most compelling in the book because it begins to delve into the psychology of the leftist mind. In this chapter Goldberg gives us an all too short glimpse of what really lies at the heart of the matter; this being that leftist ideologies (including fascism) are irrelevant or at most secondary when compared to the psychological desires of the leftist. In other words, ideology merely provides justification for the preexisting psychological desire for power or for a “politics of meaning” (i.e. politics AS meaning).

This explains why societal elites are inclined towards socialism or a variant rather than classical liberalism. The premise of classical liberalism that the power of the ruling class should be limited is diametrically opposed to the psychological desires of the elite. In socialism there are no limits on power; it provides the perfect ideological fit for the power seeking narcissist.

Furthermore this is explains why leftists seek to destroy tradition, the Church, family and private property. These all constrict or limit the power of the ruling political class. The Church is a rival authority, family a rival loyalty and private property is financial independence. The leftist must destroy all these and any other competing institution or cultural norm in society in order to fully indulge his psychological desires and fantasies; political or otherwise.

Attempting to explain the political phenomena of the last century through the lens of ideology is a flawed approach. This post-enlightenment approach attempts to classify political phenomena as a scientist attempts to classify physical phenomena. The “political science” approach is a fruitless endeavor that only leads to frustration and intellectual exhaustion. We are not dealing with mere ideology. The narcissist will grasp onto any idea that will further his ambitions or will enable him to inflict his psychosis on society; and he will reject any idea that hinders the same. The answers we seek lie beyond ideology in the deeper realm of psychology, theology and the very nature of man.

And longplay on Godfrey:

Godfrey:

longplay:

I couldn’t agree more. Having abandoned an objective creator-God, the Left (including Hillary’s Methodist pastor/mentor) has to manufacture one of their own to give the world any meaning at all. And behold, it is them!

Molothrus ater

Good writing awes me. Sometimes it’s just a phrase that does the trick. The phrase today comes from Justin Raimondo at AntiWar.com. As he bids “Goodbye, GOP” he nails in one sentence the war path to irrelevancy the party has taken.

They put all their eggs in one basket, and those eggs were hatched by the cowbirds of conservatism, the fabled neoconservatives.

Unfortunately for the unborn among us, the “official” pro-life community has put all its eggs in one basket too – the “electable” GOP – and now, in public policy at least, the life issue will suffer the same fate of irrelevancy.

Fiat Money and Family Values

The podcast of the day at Lew Rockwell’s is an interview with Jörg Guido Hülsmann on fiat money. Dr. Hülsmann delves into the moral hazards and immorality of a fiat currency.

A few years ago he wrote an excellent article on fiat currency and how it affects our culture and spiritual life. He shows that, not only is a fiat currency and the inflation that goes with it bad for business, it also attacks on many different fronts and “…assuredly destroys the family, thus suffocating the earthly flame of Christian morals.”
